GOODYEAR RIFLE CLUB
Based in a purpose built indoor & outdoor facility in the heart of Wolverhampton.
After the Home Guard was stood down in 1957 and British industry had dispensed with its integral Home Guard units, they still had their rifle ranges either in the factory areas or as part of the Sports and Recreation department.
These ranges were to remain in regular use and most factories had their own shooting teams and continued to contribute to the growing interest. Along with the now many Black Country factory teams, leagues and competitions continued to flourish.
Wolverhampton dominated the Staffordshire inter-town shooting championships in the sixties, winning the Pidduck Shield in 1966 for the ninth time in succession.
Over the coming years, many of the short-range factory clubs lost their indoor ranges and either closed their doors or found alternative facilities.
The Goodyear Rifle Club was based at a rifle range on Wingfoot Park near the grounds of the Goodyear Pavilion, but facilities at this range were to be lost in early 2006.
The Goodyear Rifle Club found a new home at the West Midlands Regional Shooting Centre, where many of our disciplines now take place.
OUR FACILITIES
22 x 10m lanes for pistol and air. Individually lighted with remote controlled targets.
6 x 25y indoor lanes for rimfire disciplines including benchrest, prone and standing.
20 x 25m outdoor range fully undercover with lighting for air and rimfire.
20 x 50m outdoor range fully undercover with lighting for air and rimfire.
10-meter air pistol shooting is a fun and exciting thing to do and any pistol with low power (not more than 6-foot pounds) can be used.
The pistol is shot using one hand only and normally using a .177 flat head pellet. Although fun, don’t be mistaken, 10-meter air pistol shooting is an Olympic event governed by the InternationalSport Federation. Go as far as you want; fun plinking or set your sights high with the Olympics.
Like the 10-meter air pistol, you can use any air rifle of sufficiently low power (not more than 6-foot pounds). Normally shot from the standing position, again using a .177 calibre rifle, this is an exacting sport.
You can pay as little or a much as you need for your rifle. For fun, you can get a suitable rifle for around £120, or as you progress into high-level competitions, you can pay £3,000+.
This sport is beloved by many of our members. Using a .22LR rimfire bolt action rifle, you can use either open sights or, more usual, a telescopic sight. The rifle is placed on a front rest and held into the shoulder by your left hand (if right-handed).
Targets are varied and can be printed at home, NSRA 10 bulltype, or UKBR targets. The choice is yours so just enjoy yourself. We have a good variety of club weapons available for members to use.
Similar to the 25-yard benchrest, but many think it more exhilarating. As the name suggests, you will use a semi-automatic rifle and the shooting can be faster, but no less accurate. Again, targets can vary from 10 bull types, through to animal silhouettes, etc.
An exacting and high-intensity sport where accuracy is the name of the game. Special rifles are required and, as a minimum, a shooting jacket, and glove.
The rifle is steadied by employing a sling, fitted to the upper left arm (if right-handed), and attached forward on the rifle. Again, this can take you all the way to the Olympics. An additional part of this sport is 3P (3 Position) where the rifle is shot prone, kneeling, and standing.
This has the same requirements and procedures as the 25-yard bench rest. These longer distances require a steady hand and lots of practice. For shooting competitions, it is normal for better quality ammunition to be used.
